Hobsons Bay Bicycle User Group (HBBUG)

About Us

The Hobsons Bay Bicycle User Group (HBBUG) is a not-for-profit, community based group of bicycle riders, living in the City of Hobsons Bay located on Port Phillip Bay south-west of Melbourne, Australia.

The HBBUG is 'For all kinds of Bicycle Riders of all ages, riding for Good Health'.

The HBBUG was formed in 2004 as a response to the perception of increasing marginalization of cyclists on the road network.  Particularly, after being banned  from riding on the Princess FWY between Laverton and Hoppers Crossing by Vicroads in 2002 and this was done without any safer alternative being provided for cyclists.

Subsequently, the HBBUG has been lobbying for the development of an integrated network of on-road bicycle lanes and the development of an integrated network of off-road shared bicycle/foot paths.

To this end we have made significant submissions to councils and state
government.

Since then, we have been working to improve conditions for cyclists and
promote bicycle riding, particularly within the City of Hobsons Bay.
Which includes the suburbs of Altona, Altona Meadows, Altona Nth.,
Brooklyn, Kingsville Sth., Laverton, Newport, Seabrook, Seaholme,
Spotswood, Williamstown and Williamstown Nth.

We sometimes present cycling issues to Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Wyndham Councils.

We enjoy our food and cycling.
So we have social events and have developed a collection of local rides to promote cycling and good health in our region.

We also operate the 'Hobsons Bay Community Bike Shed', repairing and recycling bicycles.
We gratefully accept donations of  bicycles that are unwanted. These bicycles are recycled back into use and made available 'Free' for charity, or purchase by donation for fund-raising in support of the 'Bike Shed'.
